Popular Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has taken legal action against Ecobank Ghana. He claims the bank used someone who looks like him in an advert without asking for his permission.
The ad was part of Ecobank’s campaign against fraud, called #ItsGivingScam. In the advert, there’s a young man who looks very similar to Sarkodie, and the message says “Looks can be deceiving.” This made many people think that Sarkodie was involved in the campaign.
However, Sarkodie says he had nothing to do with the ad. He also works with another bank, First Bank, as their brand ambassador. Because of this, he believes Ecobank’s ad could confuse the public and affect his image.
Sarkodie’s legal team says Ecobank broke the rules by using his image or someone who looks like him without approval. They are asking the court to:
• Stop Ecobank from using his image or likeness again
• Remove all ads connected to the campaign
• Pay damages for the harm caused
• Admit they were wrong in public
